General

The study materials for both CPP and PSP have to be purchased separately from the examination registration process of any preparation programme you may choose to follow.  There are two main sources, the US-based ASIS Bookstore and Amazon, with a variety of electronic and hardcopy options from each. The options are a little confusing and change from time to time.  Making the wrong choice can have cost implications, so you are advised to follow the advice below.

ASIS Certified Protection Professional (CPP) Materials

The reference materials for the CPP examination are:

  • The ASIS Protection of Assets Manual (8 volumes)
  • The following standards and guidelines:

Standards:

  • Chief Security Officer—An Organizational Model
  • Security and Resilience in Organizations and Their Supply Chains—Requirements with Guidance
  • Workplace Violence Prevention and Intervention

Guidelines:

  • Facilities Physical Security Measures Guideline
  • General Security Risk Assessment Guideline
  • Information Asset Protection Guideline
  • Preemployment Background Screening Guideline

Options for purchase of the ASIS Protection of Assets (POA) Manual:

  • As hardcopy from the ASIS Bookstore.  Overseas shipping charges can be very high with this option.
  • As an online product from the ASIS Bookstore.  Access expires after 12 months, there is no download facility and page numbering and editing functionality are limited.
  • As a Kindle download from Amazon.  Kindle publications are versatile and can be viewed on PCs, iPads, Androids etc.  There are several different Kindle products and making the wrong choice can be an expensive mistake.  The option you should choose is the two compendiums, each comprising four of the eight volumes that make up the POA.  The latest known links for these, from Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com, respectively, are below (click on each title to be taken to the publication):

Amazon.co.uk option

POA: Physical Security; Applications; Information Security; and Investigation

plus

POA Security Management; Legal Issues; Security Officer Operations; and Crisis Management

Amazon.com option

POA: Physical Security; Applications; Information Security; and Investigation

plus

POA Security Management; Legal Issues; Security Officer Operations; and Crisis Management

The standards and guidelines can be downloaded free by members from the ASIS Bookstore and some are available for purchase as Kindle downloads.  If you are following an ISMI® Preparation Programme you should contact ISMI® direct for assistance with procurement of the standards and guidelines.

ASIS Physical Security Professional (PSP) Materials

Currently, ASIS is in transition from one set of study materials to a new set.  ISMI® recommends that you purchase the new set as this is the less expensive option and it is these references around which the latest ISMI® Preparation Programme for the ASIS PSP is built.

The new reference materials for the PSP examination are:

  • ASIS Physical Security Principles (Knoke)
  • Implementing Physical Protection Systems, Edn 2 (Patterson)
  • ASIS Facilities Physical Security Measures Guideline
  • ASIS Business Continuity Guideline

Options for purchase of the ASIS Physical Security Principles book:

  • As hardcopy from the ASIS Bookstore.  Overseas shipping charges can be very high with this option.

Options for purchase of Implementing Physical Protection Systems, Edn 2 (Patterson):

  • As hardcopy from the ASIS Bookstore.  Overseas shipping charges can be very high with this option.
  • As both Kindle and hardcopy from Amazon (com and co.uk).  Amazon.co.uk keeps very little hardcopy stock so if you see this in the store buy it before somebody else does!

The guidelines can be downloaded free by members from the ASIS Bookstore and some are available for purchase as Kindle downloads.  If you are following an ISMI® Preparation Programme you should contact ISMI® direct for assistance with procurement of the standards and guidelines.
